Dr Francesco Cuccaro

Cancer Registry of Puglia – Section of Health Local Unit Barletta – Andria – Trani, Italy

Motivation for standing for election

I would be truly honoured to join the ENCR steering committee as ENCR is the leading institution to provide shared standards for cancer registration in Europe and to promote training of registrars. If I were elected, I would use my know-how and my skills above all to favour the maximum standardization of the procedures for the registration and coding of tumours, the drafting and dissemination of specific forms for the various tumour sites, the training of operators, the harmonization in the use of the different revisions of the ICDO3. With regard to coding, the tumours for which I believe there is a particular need for deepening and sharing and in which I can give my direct contribution are tumours of the blood and lymphatic system, bones and soft tissues, including GISTs, mesotheliomas, rare tumours.

Short CV

I am an epidemiologist in public health and I have been working for many years in the field of cancer registration and epidemiology of tumours, with an interest also in studying the associations between tumours and environmental and occupational exposures. After graduating in Medicine with a thesis in pathology on multiple myeloma (2001), then specialized in Occupational Medicine at the University of Bari (2005), I obtained a PhD in "Environment, Medicine and Health" by deepening spatial analyses on the polluted areas of Taranto and Brindisi, where the first core of the register was present. Subsequently I worked for about two years in the epidemiology unit of the Health Local Unit of Milan in the section that dealt with cancer registration, then at the Environmental Protection Agency in Bari and since May 2013 I have been working at the Statistics and Epidemiology Unit of the ASL Barletta-Andria-Trani where I mainly deal with cancer registration and analysis of data and I have been collaborating with the coordination centre of the Cancer Registry of Puglia with tasks related to training, coding quality, data quality controls and epidemiological studies. In 2018 I obtained the second level master in Epidemiology of the University of Turin, performing a study of an occupational cohort of asbestos. I am the author of several scientific articles published in national and international journals and I collaborate in national multicentre studies.
